  Moulded bullets came out undersized
Posted by: Diz9000 - 04-08-2017, 05:56 PM - Forum: Musket & Rifle - Replies (6)

Hi all.

Well my tale goes like this.  A fellow shooter has been teaching me the art of casting our own balls & bullets.  He's been casting for many years so I was happy when he told me he would show me the ropes .

Anyway, to add to our choice of cast bullets I ordered the Lee prescision .54 REAL mould.  I left the mould with him when I went out to pick up some lead from the local scrap metal merchant. I got a nice bag of roofing lead off cuts that had just been bought in by a roofer.

So I return to the casting shed ( his old garage ) and he has made himself a couple 100 whilst I was away, this all but emptied his helming pot.  We then fed in my lead and he continued to mould around 300 for me.

Now we went to the range this afternoon to try out the new REAL bullets, he has a .54 Thompson Center Arms Renegage and I have the .54 TCA Hawken.  My first 3 shots took out the 10 at 35yds, now his first 3 shots missed the target completely,  he says the bullets just drop down into the barrel where are mine need to be hammered in with a bullet starter.

I tried one if his bullets in my gun and yes it dropped straight in, and my bullet in his gun needed hammering in.

Now the only difference I can see between the bullets he has and mine , is a different lead was used.

Looking at the actual bullets, mine are nice a crisp with sharp edges , where as his are obviously slightly smaller and the edges are more rounded and not as crisp/sharp looking.

Is the issue with his lead ? Or could something else be causing his shrinkage ?

  Which mainspring please
Posted by: KieranW - 27-07-2017, 07:02 AM - Forum: Musket & Rifle - Replies (4)

Hello and thanks for your advice.   I have a MkII** Snider Enfield Naval (1862) short rifle 5 groove.  I need a replacement mainspring.  Which models e.g. P53, P58, etc mainsprings will fit this model and will reproductions from say Pedersoli probably fit?
Many thanks, K.W.

The external dimensions of the spring are  78mm, that's outside the bend of the spring to the outside of the hook i.e. the maximum length of the long part of the spring alone.  The short side external dimensions are 60mm (well 59.44).

What ball/bullet are you throwing down range ?
Posted by: Diz9000 - 26-07-2017, 06:56 PM - Forum: Musket & Rifle - Replies (1)

Currently I have access to patched ball ( as they came with the gun) and Maxi-ball ( as a fellow shooter has the mould ). Someone has suggested I try REAL bullets. ( i.e. I buy the mould lol )

I have recently been schooled in the art of casting my own maxi-balls, 3 hours later with a break for coffee, I am the proud owner of 275 lumps of shaped lead  Big Grin should keep me going for a few months.

I have had differing opinions with the maxi-ball, some say to lube others say not to. Advice please.

Also other than the REAL bullets what others are worth trying ? Considering we only shoot at 25-50m.

And whilst talking about lubes ?  Is it best to buy an off the shelf muzzle loading lube or make my own , if so any hints on the recipes/procedure involved.

In fact any hints on bullets, lubes, patches etc greatfully received.

And one final ( for now ), the rifle I bought belonged to an American gent who brought over here from the states, then sold to me via an RFD.  Now in amongst the gear we're a few sabot rounds of expanding ammo. Again different opinions have been given. Some say that it's illegal for me to have others suggest that a recent change in law has over ruled that.

I'm pretty sure the sabot rounds will never be used as I am a target shooter and not a hunter as the previous owner.

Cheers for now

  Where to source lead ??
Posted by: Diz9000 - 24-07-2017, 02:40 PM - Forum: Black Powder Chat - Replies (14)

A friend has kindly shown me how to mould my own balls ( fnar fnar  Big Grin ).
He has let me use his lead fir my first batch of 200, but has told me that for future batches I will have to source my own lead.  He gets his from a club member who works at a scrap metal yard, but a change in job means that will dry up by the end of the year.
So other than buying from the scrap metal yard, any other types of places that I might start enquiring at ?

Many Thanks

  What's in your bag ??
Posted by: Diz9000 - 21-07-2017, 05:29 PM - Forum: Musket & Rifle - Replies (9)

As you may be aware, I'm a newcomer to the world of muzzle load shooting. I was just wondering what the essential tools you have in your shooting bag/box ?
Currently I have a tool for taking my barrel off, nipple wrench, various cleaning jags, bullet puller attachment for my ram rod, bullet starter, cap loader and a ball bag ( much to my sons amusement lol ).
I guess I'm going to need to get some screwdrivers and pliers ( possibly ??? )

Anything else you think I should add to my box ?

  Thompson Center Arms Hawken
Posted by: Diz9000 - 20-07-2017, 08:08 PM - Forum: Musket & Rifle - Replies (4)

I have recently bought a Thompson Center Arms Hawken, .54 cal percussion rifle. Whilst shooting it today the bolt/screw that holds the hammer to the lock, broke off in the locks hole.  We managed to get it out with no problem. But we have not been able to find a replacement for it. Does anyone know where I might be able to get this part ? Or does anyone know the thread dimensions?

Many Thanks

Introduction and hello from South Africa

My son Kevin (22) and I (old) have been black powder and muzzleloaders for last 10 years, him more than myself. We enjoy shooting on the range and he hunts exclusively with his double .72 Pedersoli safari express. So far we have a percussion .54 Lyman pistol, .50 Stainless deerstalker Lyman and a .44 Remington army sheriff by Pietta.

My son is very eager to buy a 45-70 rolling block replica but because they are crazy expensive he has decided to sell the double. Is Pedersoli the best for the breech loader replicas?

Will post photos of hunting if anyone is interested.
