Preloaded cylinder
I have a M1851 Adams in 38bore ( = .50 cal) cased with three serial numbered spare cylinders ---  all mounted (ball down) on brass spigots in the case.  Retailed by a Liverpool gunmaker I would suspect that the owner was either worried about pirates or captain of a slaver!
